About PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field)
History
What follows is but a brief history of the evolution of PEMF. It would take volumes to adequately describe the developments and give appropriate credit to the many pioneers in this field. The end of this section contains links to various articles and videos for those interested in more detailed historical information.
Research on the effects of electric modalities on the human body has been in existence for centuries. Some 2,000 years ago the Chinese were using magnets to treat various human ailments. Magnets have continued to be used for all types of conditions – particularly to treat joint and muscle related conditions common in various sports. Japan was particularly active in their use.
While there have been roadblocks, experiments and research in the use of electric modalities for health benefits have continued. As far as PEMF is concerned Nikola Tesla, a Serbian/American genius is credited with inventing what is commonly referred to as the “Tesla Coil” which is still in use in PEMF devices today. Taking place in the 1880’s the science behind the Tesla Coil generated the development of our common use of electricity and an untold number of electrical devices. Research and testing on PEMF devices to address human ailments began to flourish in the United States and throughout many other countries – primarily in Eastern Europe and Japan.
There was, however, a large black cloud on the horizon. It would be remiss not to state the chilling effects of the Flexner Report (titled Medical Education in the United States and Canada) on the development of all types of alternative medicine (for example: homeopathic, chiropractic, natural, electrical, etc.). The Carnegie Foundation and John D. Rockefeller commissioned Abraham Flexner (a teacher and scholar) to study and evaluate medical schools and make recommendations on the restructuring of American Medical education. The report was published in 1910. While there were obvious, needed changes in medical education incorporated in the report, some of the recommendations were racist, sexist and devastating to all types of alternative medical education. As a result of the implementation of the recommendations the number of medical schools were cut in half and the number of physicians shrank drastically (at least partially accounting of the lack of physicians in the United States). The designation of the AMA as the only entity authorized to license medical schools was a direct or an indirect result of the Flexner Report. The effect was the licensing of medical schools that turned out doctors who know how to prescribe drugs but have little or no training in nutrition or any of the alternative methods of practice. PEMF does not use drugs and there is no money in it for the pharmaceutical industry. That industry provides significant support to those institutions
This resulting delay effectively allowed other countries to forge ahead (some would say decades ahead) with research and implementation of PEMF technologies. As the worldwide reports of the benefits of PEMF for humans came in, America saw the beginnings of its use, first in veterinary medicine, primarily in dogs and horses. When our astronauts returned from space quite weak, sick and with bone loss, NASA was alarmed and commissioned the design and construction of PEMF systems to help solve these distressing problems. FINALLY, America took notice and the floodgates for research and development of PEMF opened for the benefit of human beings. There have now been over 10,000 studies on PEMF and 2,000 of these have been double blind studies proving the safety and effectiveness of PEMF.

The Rouleaux Effect
As defined in Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary:
"A group of red blood corpuscles that are stuck together, resembling a roll of coins."
Corpuscles is another term for blood cells. Blood flows from the heart into a miniature systems of vessels called capillaries, delivering oxygen and nutrients throughout our bodies. Capillaries are so tiny that the red blood cells can only pass through in single file.
The cells in our bodies and a few important electrical concepts

EACH CELL IN OUR BODIES CARRIES AN ELECTRICAL CHARGE
By design our cells repel each other making it impossible for them to stick together. Our blood cells have a negative potassium ion inside each cell and a positive sodium ion on the outside. Like charges repel each other. These cells carry an electrical charge. Age, toxins, trauma, nutritional choices and lifestyle can negatively effect the cells charge, and therefore their ability to repel each other. As a result cells can stack together.

-
If 2 cells stack together their ability to perform their functions of delivering nutrients and oxygen and absorbing and riding the body of toxins is reduced to 71%
-
Many cells stacking together can reduce their ability to perform these important functions by 50 %.
-

It gets even worse because these stacked cells can branch. Due to the capillaries ability to accept cells only in single file the branched cells are completely unable to perform their critical functions.

CELL VOLTAGE
A renowned scientist and Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Otto Warburg, successfully determined that cells maintain a voltage across the cell membrane. He was able to measure voltage and found the following:
A physician famous for his outstanding research in the area determined the following:
"Chronic disease and loss of well-being is always defined by low electrical charge. With enough voltage and raw materials the body can heal almost anything."
Jerry Tennant, MD
No Drugs Involved
One of the many benefits of PEMF therapy (and of no minor significance) is that no drugs are involved. Often, and particularly in the treatment of pain, patients are prescribed drugs such as Oxycodone, Percocets, Opium, Morphine, etc. These are potentially addictive and harmful to the liver, kidneys and bowel (especially during repeated, prolonged exposure to them). Many of our service men and women return from war torn countries addicted to drugs given to handle pain associated with their terrible and tragic injuries. Folks of all ages and particularly our young have become addicted to these drugs, and have been dying from them. It is a national concern that has touched every town, county and state in our country. It is a problem of such significance that it has reached the halls of Congress where laws have been passed (and are in the mill) addressing this national crisis.
There are many non-pain related drugs prescribed for various conditions and ailments which carry with them significant contraindications. We are constantly bombarded with pharmaceutical ads from all types of media touting drugs for nearly all common medical conditions. The cautions related to these drugs can run several pages long, and we are rarely fully informed regarding these potential harms.
PEMF DOES NOT UTILIZE DRUGS OF ANY TYPE. These non-invasive sessions are safe and non-addictive. Because these sessions recharge our cells allowing the body to heal itself you won’t hear about them from the pharmaceutical industry. There are no pills to push. The following quote is right on point.
”Because it’s not a drug and not easily profited from, it has been swept under the rug and remains largely unknown, even to most well known medical professionals.”
Joanna Taylor
Contraindications
- Epilepsy and/or seizures
- Elevated blood alcohol or drug levels
- Electrical implants e.g. pacemaker; cochlear implant; intrathecal pump; insulin pump; etc.

- It is contraindicated to place a PEMF device over implanted electrical units like pacemakers, cochlear implants, intrathecal pumps, etc., because the magnetic field can shut the device off or otherwise interfere with its function.
- They are not to be used for transplant patients to prevent possible rejection of the transplanted organ.
- Many devices are not recommended for pregnant women.
- Many devices are not recommended for women with breast implants.
What is the HUGO PEMF and what does it do?

The HUGO PEMF system is truly unique.
- It is the world’s only duel full body mat, working both above and below the body, simultaneously.
- This dual mat system allows equal distribution of magnetic field through the body.
- The HUGO™ is in the High Intensity Tesla class of bio-electromagnetic PEMF devices.
- HUGO™ employs the Tesla coil, with a spark gap between the capacitor and high voltage transformer which sets the standard for this class of PEMF devices.
- The Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields penetrate deeply into the body to the cellular level.
With the HUGO™ there is no doubt that it is working – you can feel the pulsations. So-called “Low intensity PEMF” devices use resonance, also known as, oscillating magnetic fields with waveforms and frequencies (these are also referred to as “hummers”). These produce resonating/oscillating magnetic fields. These oscillating hummer type devices have different uses and applications, and they are much less expensive because of the type of components used. They work very differently energetically than High Intensity Pulsed Electromagnetic Field devices. The High Intensity nano-second spark gap PEMF is a true “pulsed” electromagnetic field.
The main benefit of using the Patent Pending HUGO™ dual mats together is lying in-between them. You could lie on just one mat and double the intensity with the dial on the driver, or you could take both mats and lie on top of both of them. Either way, you will still be exposed to an amplified magnetic field… but… you won’t get the same benefit that you get from lying between the two mats.
Magnetic fields get weak rapidly with distance, and the more matter they pass through. With the dual mat “sandwich”, the full strength of the field is placed on the back and front of the body at the same time, as opposed to just one side. Having a PEMF mat sandwich is doubling the strength of your magnetic field and equalizing the penetration of the field through the body.
If you lie ONLY on the bottom mat, then only one side of your body is receiving the full strength of the magnetic field and with that field getting weaker as it passes through your body, the other side of your body is receiving a much weaker magnetic field. Having a PEMF mat underneath and on top of the body means that both sides of your body are receiving the same strength magnetic field simultaneously and this amplifies the magnetic field.

How does PEMF differ from “electro-smog” EMF?

-
Electro-smog EMF vs. PEMF
So called "electro-smog" EMF's can cause harm to our bodies. PEMF, on the other hand supports and enhances our bodies natural ability to heal itself.
-
Primary Differences
The primary differences between harmful EMFs and therapeutic PEMFs are exposure time, wavelength, and frequency. PEMFs are safe in all three of these areas.
-
Harmful EMFs and Our Environment
Research has shown that harmful EMFs can adversely affect the nervous system in our bodies and damage cells. Tumors and cancers have been the most common health issues related to high EMF exposure. While high voltage power lines are probably the greatest danger, constant bombardment from everyday sources within our homes and workplaces have been shown to have a negative cumulative effect on our bodies. We are constantly hit with EMFs from everyday appliances, TVs, electrical sockets, cell phones, etc. While any one of these has little effect, taken together the constant exposure has a negative effect on the cells of our bodies. Studies have shown that a safe is distance from high voltage power lines is about 700’ while the distance from neighborhood powers can be as little as 10’. Unfortunately the exposure in our homes is constant and cumulative, and there is no “safe distance” from this content negative effect.

On the Other Hand:
PEMF introduces a low frequency pulsed electro-magnetic field that:
- Recharges the cells of the body, allowing them to float freely
- Increasing their effective functioning surface area,
- Consequently enhancing circulation, oxygenation and hydration.
- At the same time cellular ability to absorb nutrients and remove toxins is significantly improved.
